Hungryroot delivers to most zip codes in the 48 contiguous states and Washington D.C.
Once you place your order you are able to view your delivery and make edits. Hungryroot prefills your box based on the answers to your quiz and the plan you selected.
Hungryroot has an extensive grocery menu across the following categories Recipes/Meal Kits, Fresh Produce, Meat + Seafood, Plant-Based Proteins, Grains + Pasta, Sauces, Dressings + Dips, Bread + Bakery, Pantry, Ready To Eat, Dairy + Eggs, Beverages, Snacks, and Sweets.
Depending on the plan you select you are given “points” to spend in the Hungryroot market. So if one week you want 3 meal kits/recipes and all sweets you can do that. And then if the next week you want to stock up on meat and seafood you can do that as well. Everything is fully customizable.
We found this a little confusing on the Hungryroot site. It would be much easier if the plans were associated with points from the beginning vs recipes and ready-to-eat items.
With our plan, which has 3 recipes with 4 servings each for a total of 12 lunch/dinner servings plus 2-3 breakfast servings, 5-7 snack servings, and 7-10 sweet servings, we received 83 credits to spend in the “market” and the price of our plan is $161.85 weekly.
See below for more details on the “point” breakdown for all of the items in our order. SHOP NOW >>
For our Hungryroot reviews, we tried the following:
We scheduled our Hungryroot box to be delivered on a Sunday and it arrived right on time. The big box was well insulated and everything inside the box was cold. SHOP NOW >>
Now, let’s get into the details of the groceries we tried!
With your Hungryroot plan, you have the ability to select 2-8 meal kit recipes with each delivery – 2 serving plan includes 3-8 recipes and the 4 serving plan includes 2-4 recipes.
For our Hungryroot reviews, we selected the 4 serving plan with 3 meal kit recipes including a Sausage Flatbread, Classic Linguini and Meatballs, and Chicken n’ Guac Tacos.
The recipe for making the flatbread was very straightforward and simple. We only needed four ingredients to put it together:
This flatbread recipe was easy to make and would be perfect for a busy weekday dinner. There were more than enough ingredients included in our Hungryroot box to make this recipe.
We received enough to make 6 flatbreads and each was quite large once cooked. SHOP NOW >>
Overall we really liked the flatbread recipe. The ingredients were all high-quality and the recipe was very quick to make. The artichoke dip and chicken sausage gave a unique flavor and there were plenty of ingredients included in the box to make lots of flatbreads!
Three ingredients from the Hungryroot box were all we needed to make this linguini and meatballs recipe. Here is what we received to put this meal together:
To make the dish, we seared the meatballs with some olive oil in a skillet until they were browned. While the meatballs were cooking, we boiled the cauliflower linguini until it was nice and tender.
The marinara sauce heated in the microwave and was then poured on top of the cooked cauliflower linguini and tossed together.
The pre-cooked meatballs were added to the plate and the recipe was complete!
The grass-fed meatballs arrived fully cooked so they only needed to be heated. They were very soft and easy to eat. There were about 30 meatballs included in our box which were plenty for two people for a large dinner and leftovers.
We like that the meatballs were also gluten-free (no breadcrumbs added!) which made this whole meal gluten-free.
We really liked this linguini and meatball recipe. It was another great dish to make on a busy night as it only took about ten minutes from start to finish. The cauliflower linguini was probably the best part of the dish since it was made with a “secret veggie” but didn’t have a strong cauliflower taste. It made getting your daily vegetables easy and delicious! SHOP NOW >>
The next recipe we tried was the chicken and guac tacos. To make this meal, we received:
All in all, these tacos were quite good and another fast recipe to make. The cucumber black bean salad was the star of the show and made the tacos more exciting.
We really liked the avocado cream as well and could see using it for avocado toast, as a dip for chips, or as a sauce in other dishes. SHOP NOW >>
We chose a few different grocery options to be included in our box including Pea Snaps, Pork Carnitas, Plant-Based Smoked Chorizo, Spinach Ricotta Ravioli, several desserts, and snacks.
We tried to pick a good range of items so we could really review each type of grocery that Hungryroot carries. So here is what we thought.
We ordered pea snaps which were essentially a bag of fresh sugar snap peas. While the peas tasted delicious and were quite crispy, they had white spots all over them. We looked this up and it says that this is likely due to rough handling. Peas with white spots like ours are still okay to eat but have just been tossed around.
This was the only issue we had with any of the groceries in the Hungryroot box and, it was not actually a major problem.
Pork Carnitas were the next grocery item we picked and they were amazing. The pork came in a vacuumed sealed package that had the cooking directions clearly written on the back. The carnitas was fully cooked so they only needed to be reheated in the microwave or skillet. We chose to heat the pork in the microwave and the end result was tender juicy meat.
There was enough juice in the package to pour over the carnitas like a sauce. The meat had a sweet, orange flavor and there were even pieces of orange zest nestled into the dish. We would definitely buy this meal again as it was easy and yummy! SHOP NOW >>
Plant-Based smoked chorizo was next on the list. It was packed in a small black box and labeled as vegan, gluten-free, nut-free, and soy-free. The chorizo was made from pea protein and tomato paste as the main ingredients. That along with lots of spices made it a deep red color.
To cook the chorizo, we crumbled it into a saute pan to brown and then made it into a risotto. When cooking the chorizo, it kind of just fell apart and crumbled rather than brownie well. It looked a little dry so we added extra broth to the risotto. While the texture of the smoked chorizo was not quite the same as regular meat, it did have a strong, smokey flavor that was tasty.
The last grocery item we received was the spinach ricotta ravioli. These were a complete hit with everyone in my family. The ravioli was fresh, not frozen, so they cooked in about 3 minutes in boiling water.
The pasta was nice and soft and the filling was packed with ricotta cheese and chopped spinach. One package was enough to serve two adults and there were 13 ravioli in the pack. Very tasty dish and it would go well with a variety of the Hungryroot sauce options too! SHOP NOW >>
When signing up for Hungryroot, you can choose to receive a free gift each week. We opted to receive the “premium protein” of the week. Our premium protein was a bonus pack of the Sweet Italian Chicken Sausage that we also used in the flatbread recipe.
This was exciting as we loved the juicy, easy-to-make sausage in the flatbread recipe and could now make it again! A very good bonus item.
Hungryroot is a convenient grocery delivery service that has a lot of options and choices. Their commitment to selling foods with no preservatives or additives makes shopping for healthy, clean food easy.
We loved the wide range of groceries for specific dietary needs and liked how many unique recipes and groceries Hungryroot offered. There were so many recipes to choose from and all of them looked delicious. You could cook Hungryroot every day for months and never eat the same thing twice!
We loved how easy the recipes were to put together and our grocery delivery definitely saved time both in the kitchen and since we did not have to go grocery shopping at a “real” store.
We also really liked the number of allergen-friendly options available, including gluten-free and vegan, for those on more restrictive diets.
We weren’t a huge fan of the Hungryroot packaging as all of the groceries were just tossed in the box. The bag of spinach was ripped, the peas were a little beat up and the top of the spinach artichoke dip had fallen off. Packing the food a little better probably would have prevented all of these small issues. The point system for ordering food was also a little confusing, especially for someone ordering for the first time.
We would recommend Hungryroot for anyone looking to make healthy eating, grocery shopping, and weekly meal planning easier. There are a lot of meal kits to choose from and the groceries that we received were fresh and delicious. It is nice that Hungryroot fills your box for you based on what you want to eat and it is also great that you can pick and choose what you really want. SHOP NOW >>
